CR5000 freezing without warming

YJ_Su Feb 26, 2025 10:15 PM

I have several CR5000 dataloggers for my eddy-covariance towers. Recently, they have started freezing and unexpectedly stopping data storage without warning. I always check the datalogger status on its screen when I am in the field. When this occurs, the red flash indicator stops, and the record number no longer increases.

Sometimes, after replacing the memory card and checking the data, the logger works fine, but it freezes again within minutes or after several days.

I have already checked the following:

  1. Power Supply: The tower is powered by an external battery set with a solar panel. The issue does not seem to be related to battery voltage, as freezing occurs regardless of whether the voltage is high (>13V) or low.
  2. Internal Battery: The internal 3.6V battery is at the correct voltage.
  3. Temporary Resolution: The only way to restore operation is to unplug and reconnect the power, but this results in data loss from the time the logger stops until I check the tower, which can be several weeks.

Any diagnostic steps to help identify the cause of this issue and prevent it from recurring?
